There are beach clubs, and then there is Potato Head. Since opening in 2010 with Andra Matin's arresting architecture — a facade made from hundreds of recycled wooden shutters — the venue has become as synonymous with Bali as rice paddies and temple incense. It sits right on Petitenget Beach, and no amount of imitators has managed to replicate its particular alchemy of place.
The space is massive but never feels corporate. The ground-level beach bar buzzes from midday with sarong-clad travellers nursing Bintangs and tropical cocktails. The main pool, flanked by tiered sun terraces, draws the beautiful-people crowd in the late afternoon. Then as the sky turns gold and the Indian Ocean catches fire, the upper decks and rooftop fill with people doing what Bali demands of you: stopping, breathing, and watching the horizon.
The cocktail programme punches well above what you'd expect from a beach club. Tropical infusions using kaffir lime, coconut water, galangal, and fresh tamarind give even the classics a distinctly Balinese accent. The Smoked Coconut Negroni — their signature — has become a benchmark for the genre across Southeast Asia. Wine and spirits selections lean premium, with a thoughtful sake list reflecting the Japanese investment behind the brand.
Thursday nights bring the real spectacle: internationally touring DJs spinning on a soundsystem that fills the beach air without ever becoming oppressively loud. The date-night credentials are beyond argument — there may be no more romantic a sunset location in all of Indonesia. Arrive no later than 5pm on weekdays, 4:30pm on weekends. The upper deck fills fast and sunset views cannot be replicated from the lower terraces.
Thursday beach parties are the flagship event. Saturday nights draw the biggest international names. Sunday brunch (12pm–4pm) is a mellower, daytime version of the same energy.
