Bellboy is Israeli mixologist Ariel Leizgold's Berlin outpost, a lavish speakeasy on Anton Wilhelm Amo Straße near Gendarmenmarkt, two minutes from Stadtmitte on the U2 or U6. The Tel Aviv original sits on the World's 50 Best Discovery list, and the Berlin room imports the whole production.
Servers in 1920s costume refuse to spoil which signature drink arrives in which vessel, miniature bathtubs, ceramic heads and banana flasks included. The Berliner's review found that none of the gimmicks come off as tacky, the whimsy covers real craft.
Order the Hemingway Daiquiri, showered in tobacco leaves, or trust the staff to read your palate. Drinks run 14 to 18 euro with small plates at 12 to 16, and the ducky liver paté with pistachio tuille is the plate every table orders.
The door holds a 25 and over policy and the room rewards it, an upbeat swing soundtrack, opulence without irony, and a crowd that dressed for the occasion. The Berliner conceded there is nothing Berlin about the place, which in deep February is the point.
