A knock to enter Kreuzberg room with no menu at all, where the bar builds every drink around the guest in front of it.

Schwarze Traube hides behind a locked door at Wrangelstrasse 24 in Kreuzberg, a short walk from Schlesisches Tor. A small sign asks guests to knock and smile, and inside the room splits into three dim nooks under black wallpaper printed with gold fleur de lys.

There is no menu, and that absence is the whole concept. Time Out Berlin explains the format, the staff ask for flavor preferences and owner Atalay Aktas and his team build a drink for that answer, changing almost daily with what the market supplies.

Aktas won Germany's Best Mixologist in 2013, a run Tagesspiegel covered through to the world final, and the bar has traded on that precision since. Ingredients come from Markthalle Neun a few streets away, which keeps the builds seasonal by default.

Stil in Berlin's review praises the balance of the improvised drinks and warns about pace, a room this small with drinks this custom moves slowly when full. Weekends run to 4am, and the late hours suit the neighborhood around it.

Go on a weeknight, take the corner nook and give the bartender a real answer about what you like. For more of the city, see our Berlin cocktail bars guide, the best cocktail bars in Berlin, and the best bars in Kreuzberg.

Weeknights after the 7pm open are the calm window, when the bartenders have time for the preference conversation that makes the format work.
