Instant-Fogas

After Work Bars

Where Szimpla Kert invented the ruin bar and keeps it intimate, Instant-Fogas takes the concept to its logical extreme. Two buildings connected by internal corridors, spread across multiple floors, housing over 25 distinct bar stations, 4 club rooms, a rooftop terrace, a cinema, an art gallery, and a Thai street food kitchen. The combined capacity runs to several thousand people. It is less a bar than a small sovereign state.

Instant and Fogas were originally separate venues that merged in 2014, and the joined complex retains the character of both: Instant tends toward the larger, more theatrical spaces with theatrical decor and resident DJs, while the Fogas side preserves a grittier, more improvisational energy that echoes early ruin bar culture. The connection between them is a long corridor decorated by Hungarian artists that has become a destination in its own right.

Drinks are Budapest-cheap. A pint of local beer runs around 700 HUF. A measure of palinka, Hungary's fruit-based spirit, even less. The bar's economic accessibility makes it one of the few large-scale nightlife venues anywhere in Europe where a long evening does not require a second mortgage. Our editors position Instant-Fogas as the best option for groups and late-night revelers, while recommending Szimpla for those who want the ruin bar experience in a more manageable setting. Both belong on any Budapest live music itinerary.

The complex begins filling from 9pm on Thursday through Saturday. Earlier in the week, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday, the space transforms into something more intimate and genuinely interesting: smaller crowds, accessible bar staff, and a chance to explore the art installations properly. Rooftop access is weather-dependent but unmissable in summer.

Groups of any size. Late-night revelers who want options within one complex. First-time Budapest visitors who need to understand the ruin bar concept at scale. Budget travelers who want a full night of drinking without spending more than 5,000 HUF. Not for those seeking a quiet intimate experience.
