Apfelwein Solzer

Apple Wine Tavern Pubs $$

A fifth generation Bornheim apple wine house pouring its own pressing on Berger Strasse since 1893.

Apfelwein Solzer has belonged to the Solzer family since 1893, and the fifth generation now runs the house at Berger Strasse 260 in upper Bornheim. The family still presses its own Apfelwein, which puts Solzer in a shrinking club of Frankfurt taverns that pour their own cider rather than a wholesaler's.

Frankfurt's official tourism board lists Solzer as an original Frankfurt Wirtshaus and singles out its garden as one of the city's loveliest. Come for cider in the courtyard, schnitzel with fried potatoes, and the last of old Bornheim hospitality. Skip it if you want cocktails or quiet; this is a bench and Bembel operation. For more, see our Frankfurt pubs guide and the best bars in Germany.

Solzer sits at the quieter Bornheim Mitte end of Berger Strasse. The garden fills first on warm evenings, so book ahead for outdoor tables. Indoors is walk in friendly most weeknights.

Inside is dark wood, long tables, and decades of Bornheim history on the walls; the site's tavern lineage reaches back centuries by local accounts. The garden behind is the draw, a leafy courtyard that Frankfurt's tourism board ranks among the city's most beautiful. Service runs brisk and familial, the way the genre demands.

The reason to cross the river from Sachsenhausen is the cider itself: Solzer presses its own apples, and the difference shows in a sharper, fresher Schoppen than most wholesale pours. Take it pur if you want the full sour bite, or sauer with mineral water as Bornheim regulars do. Compare it with the Sachsenhausen tavern row at Apfelwein Wagner Frankfurt and Lorsbacher Thal Frankfurt, or browse the Bornheim bar guide.

This is a neighborhood house first. Expect Bornheim families, long standing regulars, and a steady trickle of cider pilgrims working beyond the Sachsenhausen circuit. Weekend afternoons in the garden run multigenerational; weeknights indoors stay local and unhurried.

Pair Apfelwein Solzer with the Sachsenhausen houses across the river, remember the lost Bockenheim institution Pielok, read our Bornheim guide, or browse the full Frankfurt bar guide.
