Croft & Co opened quietly on 4th Avenue about four years ago, and Parkhurst's discerning regulars found it almost immediately. The bar seats 40 across a long counter and a handful of leather banquettes, with bare-brick walls and low pendant lighting that keeps everything feeling deliberate rather than designed.

The cocktail programme draws on South African botanical spirits — buchu, honeybush, fynbos, and the occasional Cape citrus distillate — alongside more familiar base spirits. Head bartender Thabo Khumalo trained in London before returning to Joburg, and that combination of classical technique and local ingredient knowledge shows in every glass. The seasonal menu changes every 12 weeks, with around 14 original drinks plus a short classics list for guests who prefer a known quantity.

We recommend the Fynbos Spritz — buchu-infused gin, dry vermouth, Cape citrus, and a splash of sparkling wine — as a benchmark drink. It is easy drinking but technically precise, and it tastes unmistakably like Johannesburg. Croft & Co is a 40-seat bar on a stretch of 4th Avenue lined with restaurants and neighbourhood shops. There is no sign above the door — look for the frosted glass frontage and the amber-lit interior. Street parking is available on 4th Avenue and the surrounding streets; an Uber drop-off is straightforward at any hour.

The bar does not serve food, but it sits two doors down from an excellent pizza restaurant and has no objection to guests ordering delivery to the bar.
