FoxP2

Cocktail Bars $$

FoxP2 is walk-in only. Arrive before 8pm on weekends to secure a seat. The bar is small, convivial, and fills quickly on Thursdays and Fridays.

FoxP2 started as a name — borrowed from the gene linked to human language and creativity — and the bar has lived up to the premise ever since. Parked on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst, the original home of Johannesburg's creative advertising industry, it has always drawn a crowd that cares about what's in the glass. The menu changes with the seasons, but the standard never does.

The back bar is impressive without being ostentatious. You will find craft gins, small-batch rums, and whiskeys from distilleries that most people in South Africa have never heard of. The bartenders know what they're pouring and are happy to walk you through it. We recommend letting them suggest something off-menu based on what you like. They rarely miss.

The space itself is compact, warm, and faintly theatrical. Low lighting, dark wood, and a crowd that ranges from local creatives to the neighbourhood regulars who have been coming since the early days. FoxP2 is the kind of bar Johannesburg doesn't have enough of: independently owned, deeply considered, and utterly unpretentious. It belongs on any serious list of Johannesburg's best cocktail bars, and it belongs near the top.

Pair a visit with a walk through Parkhurst's 4th Avenue, which is one of the better stretches for restaurants and wine bars in the city. Or combine it with a night that starts at The Marble Bar in Rosebank and ends here — Joburg's cocktail bars reward the patient, and FoxP2 is a very good place to finish.

Ask for the current seasonal cocktail. The team builds around one hero ingredient per quarter — recent editions have featured rooibos, baobab, and wild marula.

FoxP2 does a rotating Negroni built on a different bittersweet base each season. The backbone never wavers; the expression changes completely.

Ask the bar for their current featured South African gin. Poured long over ice with a tonic and one botanical garnish. Simple, correct, and always worth the attention.
