Market House sits on the corner of Coldharbour Lane and Atlantic Road in the middle of Brixton, a Victorian pub that does two jobs in one building. Through the afternoon and early evening it stays a relaxed local with a daily happy hour from 5pm to 8pm. After dark the basement becomes a music venue, with resident DJs and outside promoters running parties until 4am on Friday and Saturday.
The split personality is the point. DesignMyNight files it under fun Brixton party bars, and that is the honest read. Come early and it is a calm spot for a drink with a group. Come late on a weekend and it is a sweaty dance floor with a queue at the door.
Anyone after a quiet, conversation-led evening should pick a different room. Market House earns its place for people who want their night to end on a dance floor a short walk from the Victoria line. For the wider area, see our guide to the best bars in Brixton and the London live music bar guide.
The building is a handsome two-floor Victorian corner pub. The ground floor keeps the pub bones, with the bar running long and the windows looking out over the Coldharbour Lane crossroads. The energy stays low key here until the evening builds.
Downstairs is the engine room. The basement holds the sound system and the late license, and it is where the DJ bookings and promoter nights play out. The two spaces let the venue move from after work pints to a 4am club without forcing either crowd on the other.
