Nick & Nora's occupies Level 1 of 80 Collins Street at the Paris end of the CBD, with the entrance tucked into Benson Walk, the arcade linking Collins to Little Collins. The Speakeasy Group built it, the same operators behind Eau de Vie and Boilermaker House.

The name honors Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man, and the room plays the part. Studio Y designed the art deco interior with geometric carpets, gold and bronze glints and soft velvet drapes, and Concrete Playground called the result the CBD's most opulent cocktail and Champagne bar.

The scale surprises people, table service runs across five rooms and three balconies seating 240. Broadsheet points drinkers to the signature list, which carries the group's theatrical flair, alongside a back bar of serious whiskies and cognacs.

The Champagne list passes 50 houses, and the kitchen keeps to canapes, local oysters, caviar and charcuterie. The crowd mixes Collins Street after work suits with anniversary bookings dressed for the room.

Book a balcony slot at golden hour and start with a martini. For more of the city, see our Melbourne cocktail bars guide, the best cocktail bars in Melbourne, and the near me bar finder.

Weeknights from opening are the calm window, when balcony tables sit free and the floor team has time to walk the Champagne list.
