Riga Black Magic Bar

Cocktail Bar Cocktail Bars $$$

Riga Black Magic Bar dresses an 18th century house on Kaļķu iela as a working apothecary, staff in period costume included. The subject is Riga Black Balsam, the 1752 herbal bitter that is Latvia's national drink.

The bar claims pharmacist Abraham Kunze may have mixed the original recipe in this very basement. The history is contested; the theater is not.

Hot chocolate runs 7 to 8 euros, cocktails more. You pay for the set, and the set delivers.

Candlelight, apothecary drawers, alchemist bottles, chandeliers, and a chocolate counter stocked from jars. Several rooms run upstairs.

The trick is downstairs: a bookcase swings open onto a hidden staircase and a cellar laboratory where the Balsam masterclasses run. Third Eye Traveller compared the whole production to a Harry Potter set and meant it kindly.

Day trippers, couples, and solo travelers; the bloggers who cover it admit the room is tourist facing and recommend it anyway. Latvians bring visiting friends here for the Balsam initiation.

Afternoons stay calm. From 5pm the costume and candle effect peaks and tables go; reserve.

Kaļķu iela 10 sits on the Old Town's main pedestrian spine, three minutes from the House of the Blackheads. Doors close at 10pm sharp; this is an early evening stop, not a nightcap.
