Nuremberg drinks beer first. The city sits in the densest brewery region on earth, so the rooms that matter are Franconian taverns and brewhouses pouring unfiltered Keller beer, with one good Tiki bar for contrast. We checked the field and kept only the four that are real and open. Closed or unverifiable names did not make the cut.
Barfüßer brews its own beer in the cellar at Hallplatz, a copper-kettle Hausbrauerei five minutes from the Hauptbahnhof. The unfiltered Keller beer is the order, poured into half-liter mugs alongside Franconian pork and dumplings. It runs daily from 11am to 1am, so you can land anytime. Go for a long table downstairs near the tanks. A proper Franconian brewhouse that does one thing right.
Das Bratwursthäusle grills its namesake Nürnberger sausages over open beechwood beside St. Sebald church, a Franconian institution going back centuries. It's a tavern first, but the regional Tucher and Lederer beers flow all day with the sausage plates. Go midday for a courtyard seat under the timber. Order six bratwurst and a Seidla of Keller beer. Touristy, sure, but the grill and the beer hold up.
Wirtshaus Hütt'n is a cramped, cheerful Franconian inn buried in the Altstadt, all dark wood and shoulder-to-shoulder benches. Regional beer comes cheap and the kitchen sends out Schäufele and dumplings until late. It fills with locals, not coach tours. Go on a weeknight and squeeze onto a long table. Order whatever Franconian draft is on and a plate of pork. The kind of honest tavern Nuremberg does best.
Bunte Bar brings Tiki to Weinmarkt 16, a loud, colorful cocktail room stacked with rum and umbrella drinks. It made Falstaff's Nuremberg best-bars list on the strength of its tropical menu and late hours. Go on a weekend when the place is packed and the blender never stops. Order a rum punch and split a bowl drink. Kitsch done with real bartending behind it.
