Chicago runs two live music traditions deeper than almost any American city. The blues clubs hold the North and South sides, several open for decades. The indie and rock rooms cluster in Pilsen, Ukrainian Village and Wicker Park. The ten below cover both, ordered by how essential they are to a first visit.
The Green Mill opened in Uptown in 1907 and still trades on its jazz and its Prohibition history, down to the booth Al Capone's crew favored. Jazz plays nightly, and the Uptown Poetry Slam has run Sundays since 1986. It is cash only. Best late on a Saturday for the after-hours set. Keep quiet during the music, since the room enforces it.

The kitchen turns out Louisiana plates, and free acoustic sets run at lunch. Best for a full blues night with dinner. Book ahead for the January dates.

Two stages alternate bands so the music never stops, and the room stays open until 4am, 5am on Saturdays. A Southern kitchen runs late. Best after midnight when both stages are loud. The Empty Bottle opened in Ukrainian Village in 1992 and remains the city's home for indie, punk and experimental music. The room is small, the sound is loud, and Monday shows are often free. The Hideout hides behind industrial yards in West Town and has run since 1996 in an old balloon-frame house. The roughly 100-seat room books alt-country, indie and offbeat bills, and it sold to a new owner in March 2026 who pledged to keep its character. Subterranean sits on North Avenue in Wicker Park and stacks a stage and balcony into a narrow two-level room. It books hip-hop, indie and rising touring acts, and its long-running open mic feeds the local scene. The floor stands and fills fast. Best for an early-career bill before the act outgrows the room. Chop Shop runs on North Avenue in Wicker Park as a combined restaurant, bar and music hall, with a main room holding over 1,000.
