The Latin Quarter cellar has run swing and bebop nightly since 1946, its vaulted stone room doubling as a dance floor for jive and lindy hop. La La Land borrowed the look. The act changes every night and the crowd actually dances. Best before 10pm if you want space on the floor. A drink in hand, not a tasting menu, is the point here.

Doors open from 3pm daily, with serious programming most nights. The rooms are small and the sightlines close. Best for a booked seat at a named act rather than a walk-in. Come for the music first, the bar second.
The 500-capacity room on rue des Petites Ecuries has booked jazz, blues, soul and world acts since 1981, from Avishai Cohen to Talib Kweli. The standing floor fills for the bigger names. This is a concert hall with a bar, not a lounge. Best to book ahead and arrive for doors. Check the calendar, because the genre swings hard from one night to the next.
The Les Halles club at 58 rue des Lombards has run since 1983, leaning into Afro-Caribbean jazz, funk and groove across a long nightly program. Open to 6am, with a Sunday jam that draws the city's players. The upstairs room is intimate and warm. Best late, once the jam loosens up. A drink and a seat close to the stage is the move.

Erik Truffaz and Melody Gardot have played the room. Two sets most nights, plus late jams. Best for a booked table at the early set. Come for serious listening, not background music.

The room is small and the booking favours emerging acts and residencies. No cover means you can drop in and decide. Best midweek for new talent before the weekend crowd. A beer suits the room better than a cocktail.
The canal-side arts space on quai de Valmy has booked indie, electronic and experimental acts since 2004, with a bar and terrace open all day. The concert room is raw and loud, the crowd young, the booking willing to take risks. Best in summer, when the canal terrace fills before doors. Come for a bill you have not heard of yet.
A 2,500 square metre cultural venue in the 20th, open since the 1870s as a workers' cooperative and now a multi-room space for concerts, club nights and a rooftop garden. The booking runs from world music to electronic, and the Sunday jazz brunch is a fixture. Best for a full evening across rooms rather than a single set. Check which space your act is in.
