Haka

Craft Beer $$

Haka, formally Oluthuone Haka, pours from about twenty rotating taps at Toinen linja 7 in Hakaniemi, a few minutes from the market hall and the metro. The list runs almost exclusively Finnish craft, and Time Out includes it among the best bars in Helsinki.

It suits beer nerds, methodical tasters, and locals who want a serious list without ceremony. It will frustrate cocktail drinkers; the taps are the entire program.

A modern beer house, warm and unfussy, with the tap board doing the talking. Time Out flags the welcome from Texan bartender Will Torrey, who makes the room feel like a regulars bar on your first visit.

The house trick is the 10cl pour, priced at the same per litre rate as a full pint, which turns the whole board into a tasting menu. MyHelsinki describes the rotation as constantly changing craft specialities, and the Untappd page lists what is on right now. Expect Helsinki craft pricing, around 8 to 10 euros a pint, less per litre as you size down.

Hakaniemi and Kallio locals, beer travelers working the city's taproom circuit, and quiz teams every other Wednesday, when the pub quiz runs in English. The volume stays conversational all week.

Hakaniemi is the working harbor edge of the center, one metro stop from the railway station, with the market hall for pre beer pastries. The craft crawl continues at Sori Taproom across the bridge in the center.

Weekday afternoons give you the bartender's full attention on the board. Every other Wednesday brings the English quiz; weekends stay sociable rather than loud.

Helsinki has flashier bars, but none more honest about what they do. Haka pours Finland by the centilitre and lets the board argue for itself.
