Bar Enigma asks you to solve a riddle before it pours you a drink, which would be insufferable if the drinks did not hold up their end. They do. The bar belongs to Pablo Prufer, Chile's 2021 World Class winner, with Miguel Ferrada and head bartender Paula Cisternas running a program that carbonates, clarifies, and milk washes with intent. Guia Comino credits the bar with making its name by rowing against the current, and the current here is all of Santiago's lookalike speakeasies.
The location is the real eccentricity: residential La Reina, behind a cheerful daytime cafeteria called Montpellier, far from the Lastarria and Bellavista circuits. La Tercera called it the secret luxury bar that surprises in La Reina. Compare Bar The Clinic, which hides its politics in plain sight downtown; Enigma hides everything, including the front door.
Signature cocktails run CLP 7,900 to 9,500. The food, rolls and gyozas and fries, exists so you can keep drinking. Plan accordingly.
Past the riddle, the room turns industrial steampunk: exposed brick, metal fittings, and warm Victorian lighting dim enough to make the cafeteria outside feel like a different country. The menu arrives as a deck of explanatory playing cards in an eco leather envelope, a trick that gets phones face down on the table within minutes.
The crowd is intimate by design: cocktail enthusiasts, anniversary couples, and La Reina locals who treat the place as their secret. Friday and Saturday need reservations. Tuesday through Thursday the bartenders have time to explain what carbonation does to clarified pineapple, and they enjoy being asked.
The counterpoint: TripAdvisor sits at a modest 3.6, with some finding the drinks more show than flavor. The show is half the ticket price here; know that going in.
