Seoul plays live in two keys. Hongdae built the country's indie scene in its basements and back rooms, the clubs that raised a generation of Korean rock and folk, while Itaewon and Gangnam kept the jazz tradition that started in the seventies. The oldest jazz club in Korea still books a band every night. We mapped the seven rooms where Seoul plays live best.

The jazz rooms

Seoul's jazz runs from a Hongdae room named for a piano legend to the oldest club in the country.

Editor's №1

Club Evans

Named for pianist Bill Evans, this Hongdae room is the one Seoul's jazz musicians treat as home, with weekend crowds that prove it. The bill runs nightly, and the venue keeps its own recording studio and jazz academy upstairs. Show up for a weekend set, sit close, and let the local players stretch out. Best on a Friday or Saturday when the music runs late.

Once in a Blue Moon

Open since 1998, this three-floor Cheongdam institution turns Gangnam into New Orleans for a night, with bands every evening and cocktails named after jazz greats. The wine list tops a hundred bottles and the kitchen takes itself seriously, so come for dinner and stay for the late set. A booking rewards you here. Best for a dressed-up night that runs long.

All That Jazz

Korea's oldest jazz club has booked a band every night since 1976, and a 2023 move gave it a sharper, modern room near Itaewon without losing the lineage. This is the deep-roots stop, the one that started the whole scene. Order a drink, take a seat early, and let the history play. Best on a weeknight when the regulars and serious listeners turn up.

Club Bbang

Club Bread has carried Hongdae indie since 1994, a small rock cafe near Ttaeng Ttaeng Alley where the house bands play Wednesday through Sunday. Some nights you get a chair, some nights you stand, but you always get the real underground. Go for a band you have never heard of, stand close, and trust the booking. Best midweek for the diehards.

Club FF

One of the few truly underground live rooms left in Hongdae, Club FF runs a fresh band every hour until midnight, then hands the floor to a DJ. The crowd is young, queer-friendly, and there for the music, and the drinks stay cheap. Go Thursday to Sunday, catch the early sets, then stay to dance. Best late, when the live show tips into the DJ set.

Rolling Hall

Rolling Hall has anchored Hongdae live music since 1995, a proper concert room that books Korean and international acts across every genre and marked its 30th year in 2025. This is the bigger stage, the one for a named bill rather than a walk-in jam. Check the calendar, book the night you want, and arrive early for a good spot. Best for a headliner show.

BoogieWoogie

BoogieWoogie backs Seoul's up-and-coming bands with live music every night near Itaewon, running from standard jazz through funk, soul, and hip-hop beats. There is no cover, though the room asks for a 5,000 won donation to the players. Regulars praise the cocktails and pizza as much as the music. Best any night for an easy, band-first hang that does not empty your wallet.

How we picked

How we picked

For the first stop, Club Evans in Hongdae is the room that defines live jazz in Seoul. For the deepest roots, All That Jazz has booked a band every night since 1976. For the indie history, Club Bbang has carried the Hongdae scene since 1994. Most of these take walk ins, though Once in a Blue Moon and the bigger Rolling Hall bills reward a booking. Check the night's calendar before you go.
