Tavern Law opened on 12th Ave in Capitol Hill in 2009 and took new ownership in late 2025. Downstairs is the main cocktail and dinner room; upstairs, Needle & Thread is a reservation-only speakeasy with no printed menu. Open 5pm to 2am daily. Ask for the upstairs seat in advance. Best for a date that wants the hidden-room trick done right.

Owner Matthew Powell pours rare spirits by the ounce, in flights, or in built cocktails, with alcohol grams listed on the menu. Reserve, because it fills by the day of. Best for a spirits geek who wants a near-private library.

Closed Monday and Tuesday; open to midnight midweek and 2am on weekends. Come early, come small. Best for a whisky drinker who wants the deepest backbar in the city.

The list runs by base spirit, so pick your poison and let them build. Best for a late, low-lit drink when Capitol Hill feels too far. It is 21 and over.
